In a significant week for apprenticeship training, LMETB’s Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre of Excellence (AMTCE), Dundalk, welcomed nine apprentices on to the first intake for the new Robotics and Automation Apprenticeship.
This pioneering programme provides a new pathway into careers in robotics, automation and smart manufacturing. The apprentices started their Phase 2 specialist classroom instruction at AMTCE, which combines with industry-based learning in their workplace.

Developed in response to growing industry demand for skilled automation and robotics technicians, the programme aims to equip apprentices with the practical and technical expertise needed to support increasingly automated manufacturing environments. The apprenticeship is coordinated by LMETB and is delivered at the high-tech training facility, AMTCE, in Dundalk in conjunction with industry partners.
Welcoming the apprentices, Mary Glennon, National Programme Manager said:“Welcoming the Robotics and Automation Apprentices for their Phase 2 training at AMTCE is an exciting and important milestone. These nine apprentices are embarking on a programme that has been specifically designed to meet the future skills needs of industry. The industries employing these apprentices range from Med Tech and Pharma to maunufacturing, mining, industrial electrical systems and system integrators, demonstrating the demand for skilled techinicians across manufacturing sectors. We are delighted to support these learners as they begin their careers in this innovative and rapidly evolving field.”
Sadie Ward McDermott, LMETB Director of Further Education and Training Director welcomed the commencement of the Robotics and Automation Apprenticeship and the arrival of the apprentices, saying:
“LMETB is proud to commence the Robotics and Automation Apprenticeship representing a significant step forward in how we prepare our workforce for the future requirements of industry. As manufacturing continues to embrace digital transformation, the demand for highly skilled automation technicians has never been greater. This QQI level 6 programme provides a direct, accessible pathway into those careers while supporting industry to innovate and grow. The arrival of the first cohort of Phase 2 apprentices represents an important step in building Ireland’s future talent pipeline for advanced manufacturing and reinforces AMTCE’s role as a national centre for industry-focused training and skills development.”
